CHANGE ORDERS / 3 MIN READ

Before you approve that change order, ask these questions.

Launch draft: this original article is prepared for Aaron’s review before public release.

A change order deserves the same care as the original proposal. Start with the original written scope and follow the change from there.

What exactly has changed?

Ask for a description of the added, removed, or revised work. Compare it with the original scope and any previous written changes. Keep the conversation focused on the documents and on what needs to happen next.

What does the new price include?

Ask the contractor to identify the labor, materials, and other items covered by the proposed change. If work is being removed, ask whether a credit applies. Clarify any remaining allowances or unknown costs.

What happens to the schedule?

Ask whether the change affects the completion date, material lead times, access to your home, or other trades. Request the agreed scope, price adjustment, and schedule impact in writing before making your decision.

The price tells you what you’ll pay. The scope tells you what you’ll get.
